Character Blog #4

Since The Natural is over I can say what I believe is going through Roy Hobbs head and what he is feeling at this point in the book. Roy is confused because he went to a party in the hotel the day before his big game. What happened at the party was he got food poisoning. This was not the best thing to do before his big game because without Roy the Knights can’t win a game. Roy goes to the hospital and is very sick. Finally at the last minute possible the doctors release Roy to go and play in the game. In the game Roy is not doing to well. He is hitting foul balls left and right, and unfortunately he hits one into his love Iris. When he sees that he has hit her he runs up in to the stands flying sparks from his cleats and carries her into the club house. She then tells him he has to hit a home run for there son. Roy is so shocked and his next swing he hit’s the ball, it goes foul and wonderboy breaks in half one end facing third base and one end facing first base. www.popsci.com/score/artical/2008-05/when-will-baseball-tame-broken-bats

Right now in The Natural by Bennard Malamud, Roy Hobbs is in a little bit of a pickle. Roy Hobbs really likes Memo Paris and she is not every interested in him. When Roy tries to put the moves on Memo, she breaks down and cries. Roy is confused because he thought that he hurt her. When all of this is going on, they are in a car driving down a road at high speeds and hit a boy. Meanwhile back on the baseball side of Roy’s life, Roy is very angry and wants to quit baseball because he is not doing so great. He is really starting to stink, and fans are starting to wonder if he is a one hit wonder. Also Roy’s coach told him to give up wonder boy or he can’t bat. Roy is angry and refuses to and sits on the bench for a few games. Until Roy’s coach let him go into the game. At this time Roy is under pressure to hit a home run because the little boy that they ran over went to Roy and told him that the only way his son would live is for Roy to hit a home run. www.answers.com/topic/rundown

Firefighter

When I was little I had a passion to be a firefighter. When I see a firefighter I look at them like heroes, they put there life on the line everyday for everyone. I heard that you never question a firefighter, "why are you a firefighter". It is not for the money they are not paid enough. They do it because they feel it is calling them. They have that in them and it takes real courage to run in to a burning building when everyone else is running out. http://pantherfile.uwm.edu

So far in The Natural by Robert Redford, Roy Hobbs has run into a little bit of trouble here and there. I think that Roy feels that he is being treated less like a star which is what he wants to be treated like. He is mad because he feels that he is not being paid a fair wage for the effort he has put into the organization. When Roy gets kick off the team because he was being selfish and wanted more money, the Knight’s realized that they couldn’t have a winning season with out Roy after Bump died. Once Bump died Roy saw his chance to shine and be the best. When Bump died Memo had a really terrible getting over the fact. Roy helps her get through that when he was at the bar a saw Memo there with Gus he cracks jokes and makes her laugh. By Roy cracking jokes and making her laugh helps Memo forget about the death of Bump. When Roy hit’s the cover off of the baseball Redford described how it made a sound like a twenty one gun salute. This is significant because Roy’s bat is like the gun and the baseball is the bullet flying through the sky after he hit it or the solider put the trigger. www.poopreading.com/.../

Blog topic #5

I think what Robert Redford is trying to communicate through The Natural is Robert Redford is trying to engage the reader, for example he explains every detail. Like on page 53 of the natural when the author is explaining Fishers flop, he goes into great detail about the story. I thought he did a good job of engaging the reader. This also includes hooking the reader because I can honestly say that I couldn’t put the book down while I was reading the chapter, Robert Redford is very talented to be able to do this. Robert Redford does a great job of foreshadowing too, because when Sam is reading the paper about a women going around killing sports athletes you really want to know who it is, you think that it is Harriet Bird but you’re not really sure because it doesn’t say it in words until the end of the chapter. Robert is trying to communicate these examples because it’s better to keep the reader engaged and hooked to the book it’s good to keep the reader engaged into the book so that the reader doesn’t get lost and puts the book down. Redford puts these in the book because the fit into the story well. http://unrealitymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/robert-redford-the-natural-photograph-c10103386.jpg
